Published annually since 1849 and the first biographical book of its kind, is among the world's most recognised and respected works of reference. It contains over 33,000 short biographies, continually updated, of living noteworthy and influential individuals, from all walks of life, worldwide. Approximately one thousand new entries are added every year.

	As part of Cumbria Libraries plans for the National Year of Reading all in County requests will be free from 23 April 2008. Please be aware that if several requests are ordered at once they may arrive at a similar time, and may have to be returned within the three-week loan period due to demand.

	Bill Birkett : A Year in the Life of Skye. Cumbrian writer Bill Birkett shares his passion for mountain walking, climbing and photography as he turns his lens to capture a Year in the Life of Skye. In the relaxed and informal atmosphere of Kendal Library Bill takes us through the seasons with his stunning photographs, tales and anecdotes.
